Long gone are the days when video on demand platforms were without competition. At a time when services are multiplying, some are seriously starting to pay the price. And among the lot, Disney + has become expensive in 2023.
A decision with serious consequences
While streaming players are engaged in a merciless battle, many have decided to increase their prices. From Netflix to Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video, subscribers have looked grim in recent months upon learning that their wallets would be even lighter. Disney perhaps thought that the year of its centenary would be one of records, but the opposite scenario was written. By analyzing the financial results of Mickey's house, Variety managed to quantify the loss of subscribers during the last quarter of 2023 and the figure is simply dizzying! Variety reports that 1.3 million subscribers left Disney + during the last three months of 2023, undoubtedly scalded by the increase in prices.
As it stands, Disney + remains below the 150 million subscriber mark (149.6 precisely counting the Indian branch Disney + Core which offers lower prices). For comparison, Netflix has 260 million subscribers and Amazon Prime Video has now reached 200 million subscribers. By focusing on the Star Wars and Marvel universes, Disney + hit hard and expected positive feedback from subscribers. But the graft did not take full effect and Disney also made cancellation decisions, like the competition, which greatly displeased. Does this mean that Disney has a definitive position against Netflix and Amazon Prime Video? Nothing is less sure.
2024, the revival for Disney +?
With the multiplication of offers, Disney + should benefit from great growth in this new year since the senior management of the firm expects between 5.5 and 6 million additional subscribers. If we rely on the impact of the price increase at Netflix (and the removal of password sharing), this resulted in a sudden drop in subscribers, but this situation was only temporary. In the weeks and months that followed, more than 6 million accounts were opened on Netflix! The fact remains that Disney + will have a lot to do to ensure that its programs reach as many people as possible. All that remains is to hope that the WandaVision spin-off or X-Men'97 live up to expectations!
