Well-known smart home security camera maker Wyze said that due to a network outage last week, about 13,000 Wyze camera owners briefly had access to images and videos from the homes of other Wyze camera users. At the same time, 1,504 users started viewing images from other people’s devices by clicking an icon received from another camera.
Wyze notified all Wyze camera users of the incident, noting that the problem only affected a small portion of its customers, and 99.75% of all Wyze equipment user accounts were not affected.
In an email, the company said the incident was caused by the recent integration of a third-party client caching library into its system. “This client library was faced with unprecedented load conditions caused by concurrent devices connecting to the network. “As a result of increased demand, there was confusion between device IDs and user IDs, causing the former to be associated with inappropriate accounts,” the company said.
To prevent the issue from recurring, Wyze has added a new level of verification when users connect to camera video. The company has also modified its system to bypass caching when checking user-device relationships until new client libraries are identified and subjected to rigorous stress testing against extreme events.
