I'm very honest, I've never bought a webcam in my life, in fact, I hate being asked to turn on the camera on a daily basis, whether in meeting situations (Zoom, Meets, Teams, etc…), or video calls. When I'm in front of the PC, I want to be comfortable! I don't want to worry about whether I'm well dressed, clean, combed, whether what's behind me is tidy, etc…
However, the reality is that the world of webcams has gained new life during the COVID-19 pandemic, and in fact, despite the fact that we are already in 2024, it is a market segment that continues to be the target of strong investment. , interestingly from several renowned manufacturers.
My question is… Why!?
Are you still buying Webcams in 2024? Talk to us!
Therefore, with the COVID-19 pandemic sending millions of people home, it was necessary to create an online team working environment, which is exactly where we saw the rise in popularity of services such as Zoom, Meets, Teams, etc… Services that are still used today, at a time when remote work continues to be a “thing” for many good people, despite the many efforts of several companies to limit it.
However, in a world where we have cameras everywhere, whether on laptops, smartphones, tablets, etc… Does the bet that so many manufacturers are making on webcams still make sense? Especially on products over €200?
After all, it's one thing in the world of streaming, where we have specialized webcams, because seeing the person behind the monitor is extremely important. Which is exactly why we had the opportunity to review an Elgato webcam a few months ago. This is also a “niche” submarket.
But… For the normal consumer? I don't believe there is (still) a huge demand!
That's exactly why I want to know your opinion. Did you have to buy a webcam during the pandemic? Do you still use the services mentioned above? Or do you avoid turning on the camera as much as possible, preferring to be in your pajamas without anyone having the slightest idea?
