JK Rowling may be a true literary star, but she also generates bad buzz for her anti-LBGT comments. This is enough to add fuel to the fire.
Successes and controversies
The least we can say is that JK Rowling is one of the most important novelists of her era: the woman behind the Harry Potter books has become an extremely powerful actress in popular culture, having earned a fortune making her the richest author in the world, no less. It must be said that its franchise is a true classic that has shined (and still shines) in many mediums, ranging from literature to cinema to video games.
However, it has been years since the British woman is noted for her strong opinions on homosexuality and transsexuality, which she categorically rejects. A position which will have caused real bad buzz, going as far as certain boycotts and controversies which still continue to cause ink to flow.
A gift that does not pass
Few months ago, The For Women Scotland association, which advocates for the rights of non-trans women and opposes those of trans women, has requested a judicial review by the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom. In cause? In 2021, the association attacked the Scottish government for its legal definition of the term “woman”: the latter asserted that a “woman” was one who lived as a woman or one who intended to follow or had already followed the process of legal gender recognition. A definition that did not correspond to For Women Scotland, but its legal challenge ultimately led to nothing.
The organization thus requested a second judicial review, also rejected in December 2022 with an appeal lost in November 2023. However, the Supreme Court finally authorized the association to appeal again to it a few days ago… which costs money. A lot.
And this is precisely where JK Rowling intervenes: the writer has decided to make a donation of 70,000 pounds (81,000 euros) to For Women Scotland in order to contribute to the legal costs necessary to appeal to the Supreme Court. “You know how proud I am to know you, thank you for your hard work and perseverance. This is a historic affair,” she said then.
It goes without saying that this new gesture should enrich the controversy and relaunch the debates concerning her, but also her involvement in future Harry Potter projects. A priori, she should actually participate in the reboot as a television series by HBO.
