In the future, Sony allegedly wanted to launch an entire sub-franchise.
Sony Pictures will not produce a sequel to Madame Web, The Hollywood Reporter claims, citing its own data. Initially, the publication writes, the company hoped to launch a sub-franchise in the Spider-Man universe.
After the film's disastrous start, Sony's plans allegedly changed. At the start, Madame Web earned about $51 million, the project budget is estimated at at least $80 million.
The film's revenue is expected to decline rapidly. According to THR's interlocutor at the film market, after the release of critical reviews of Madame Web, viewers began to return tickets; the film's audience rating was also low.
And here's another story
According to one of the publication's sources, there is a possibility that interest in Madame Web was not very high, partly due to the fact that all the main characters are played by women. Meanwhile, the main audience for superhero films is men.
At Sony, writes The Hollywood Reporter, the mood is now “gloomy.” The company allegedly planned to tell the story of a team consisting of Spider-Women under the leadership of Madame Web, but now this will not happen.
As one of the film industry veterans estimates, the next film about Madame Web will definitely not be released in the next decade. Sony representatives have not yet commented on plans for the character's future.
