Xbox still has no plans to abandon physical editions of video games. This was revealed by Phil Spencer, head of Microsoft's gaming division, who during a recent interview explained how the presence of physical games is considered strategic for the company.
During an interview with journalist Stephen Totilo, Spencer spoke thus of the problems relating to the existence of physical securities: “Gaming consoles have become some of the last consumer electronics to have a player, and that's a big deal, even just in terms of how many manufacturers are left to produce them and the associated costs. When we think about the gears that we are going to put into a console, since there are fewer suppliers and fewer buyers, the cost of the units ends up having some impact“.
Despite some problems, the head of Microsoft Gaming announced that physical copies will not be abandoned: “I can say that our strategy does not depend on people going completely digital and eliminating the physical. This would not be a strategic move for us.”
Lately, Spencer reiterated that Xbox Game Pass appears to be a sustainable service and will not arrive on PS5 and Nintendo. Starfield and Indiana Jones won't be coming to other consoles either. Meanwhile, the Activision-Blizzard acquisition caused Xbox's revenue to surge from October to December 2023. By the way, Xbox Game Pass will also get richer of Activision Blizzard titles in 2024.
