Aggregators of film critics' ratings give hope that Dune: Part Two by Danie Villeneuve will become one of the best films of the year, at least among spectacular blockbusters. The average Metacritic score is 80 points, and the freshness rating on Rotten Tomatoes is almost off the charts – 97%.

The blockbuster drought has ended thanks to a brilliant sequel set on a sweltering desert planet.
Dune: Part Two is exactly the film that the first part promised, a rare sequel that not only surpasses its predecessor, but improves on it in retrospect… One of the best blockbusters of the century to date.
The French-Canadian director has expanded and deepened the world built around Herbert's prose—a youth romance blown up to biblical-epic proportions, a Shakespearean tragedy of power and corruption, and a visually sumptuous second act that makes its impressive, gripping predecessor look just a proof of concept. Villeneuve has outdone himself.
Villeneuve treats each frame as if it were a painting. Each design choice seems to be channeled through millennia of alternate human history, from cryptic hieroglyphs to a variety of creative masks and veils designed to hide the faces of those manipulating the levers of power, almost all of them women.
The second part suffers from a frustrating superficiality when it comes to its depiction of the Fremen, an indigenous people fighting for self-determination within the empire; the film struggles to fully capture the nuances of Herbert's anti-imperial and environmentally dystopian text.
No director has better captured the scope of this saga (which is why, despite being twice disappointed, I still can't help but look forward to Dune: Messiah), and – sometimes for the better, but usually for the worse – no director can capture how Paul can lose his perspective amid the power and resources that have been placed at his disposal.
