While the numbers of Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag triple, there is no equally encouraging news for Ubisoft when it comes to Skull & Bones, the new pirate-themed game now available on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series
According to a report from Insider Gaming, Skull & Bones currently has around 850,000 total players, including those who chose to play with the eight-hour free trial provided by Ubisoft. On the bright side, those users who have already sailed aboard their ship are seeing a good level of engagement, with the average user playing between three and four hours a day. However, it remains to be seen whether or not the data will change once the free trial expires, or whether on the contrary it will convince players to purchase the full game. We probably won't get data on this until the company's next earnings call around May 2024.
Although this is not an excessively poor result, the playerbase less than one million players (also inclusive of those who play via the trial version) is not of great encouragement for Ubisoft, especially considering that Skull & Bones is a quadruple A, according to the words of CEO Yves Guillemot, and is therefore sold at the premium price of 80 dollars. On the contrary, a source within the company who contacted Insider Gaming stated that “We all know this is a $30-$40 game at bestbut it is not within our power to determine these things.”
