The seasons follow one another, but are not the same in the small world of Japanese animation. January 2024 was one of the richest months for new releases in several years, but another anime was lying in wait. This month of February, the creators of Jujutsu Kaisen and Monsters (One Piece) offer us an animated series that enters directly into the TOP 100 best anime of all time.
The “Ninja Kamui” phenomenon
The Japanese animation market is dominated head and shoulders by Crunchyroll and subsequently Netflix, at least in the West. However, a new player seems determined to grab some share of the said market in 2024 by producing an original anime. And to do this, Adult Swim has hired the services of director Sunghoo Park who notably officiated on the film Jujutsu Kaisen 0, but also the character designer of Afro Samurai (Takashi Okazaki). To complete this team, the animation studios responsible for the One Piece prequel “Monsters: The Inferno of the Flying Dragon of 103 Passions” (broadcast on Netflix and ADN in France) joined the project.
Ninja Kamui is an original anime – understand here that it is not an adaptation of a pre-existing manga – taking as its setting a science fiction universe leaning towards cyberpunk. This Adult Swim production follows a former assassin's quest for revenge following the massacre of his family for the organization to which he once belonged. Ninja Kamui is available in France via Amazon. To watch this anime, you must subscribe to both Prime Video (€69.90/year or €6.99/month) and the Warner Pass (€9.99/month) or Adult Swim + Warner TV Next ( €2.99/month).
Joe is a ninja who turned his back on his clan to live with his wife and son. One night, his family is murdered by a mysterious organization. Listening only to his anger, he swears revenge. – Amazon Prime Video
Ninja Kamui has made a remarkable entry into the TOP of the best anime available on the internet. Its rating of 8.61/10 on MyAnimeList (a social network specializing in Japanese animation) allows it to rise to 85th place in the ranking after only two episodes broadcast. With a total of 12 episodes, Ninja Kamui can still climb several ranks and thus enter the closed circle of the 50 best Japanese animated series of all time.
