Helldivers II, despite the difficulties it encounters, is a game that exudes the passion of its developers. A fun and enjoyable software with many details and a solid technique, but nevertheless built using an abandoned graphics engine. Explanations.
News from the front
In just a few days, Helldivers II has managed to conquer the hearts of players against all odds while the developers of Arrowhead struggle painfully to stay above water. Victim of his own success, the software has encountered many problems since its launchin particular because of connection peaks which undermine the servers and prevent players from defending democracy.
But beyond the difficulties it encounters, Helldivers II is a real success, an excellent cooperative game which finds a special place among the catalog of Playstation exclusives. Once in the game, the software is teeming with details and puts the emphasis on immersion using a solid and mastered technique. A fact all the more surprising when we know that the game is based on an abandoned graphics engine.

Blood, tears and an abandoned graphics engine
Unlike its predecessor which was played in isometric view, Helldivers II adopts a third-person view and offers an experience of a completely different caliber. However, you should know that the license is based on the same graphics engine, namely Autodesk Stingray, also known as Bitsquid. This Swedish graphics engine is used by several studios in the country including Arrowhead, and has been observed on games like Warhammer Vermintide 1 et Vermintide 2, Warhammer 40,000 : Darktide, Escape Dead Island or War of the Vikings. Helldivers II is the last game under Autodesk Stingray, but you should know that the graphics engine has been abandoned since 2018. Information recently confirmed by Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt in response to an article from 80 Level.
This is true. Our crazy engineers had to do everything, with no support to build the game to parity with other engines.
And yes. The project started before it was discontinued.

This is true. Our crazy engineers had to do everything without any support to build the game on par with other graphics engines. And yes, the project started before it (the graphics engine) was abandoned.
The Arrowhead developers therefore managed to build their software using an abandoned engine, without any technical support. A real feat which could have completely worked against them, but which remains logical given the history of the studio. As Johan Pilestedt points out, the project started before the abandonment of Autodesk Stingray and the studio had always used this engine. Starting all the work again from another graphics engine would surely have required too much time and investment from the teams. A wise and profitable choice as the players have noticed.

Helldivers 2 is the video game to absolutely try with friends at the start of the year. I loved exterminating aliens in the name of freedom and democracy!
