During the Nintendo Direct presentation on February 21st, the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection, a remastered edition of the two classic Battlefront offshoots, was announced. Somewhat surprisingly, the release is approaching quite soon: From March 14th, the collection of Star Wars games for the PC, Playstation 4/5 and Xbox Series/One as well as the Nintendo Switch, which were then distributed by LucasArts, will be available in stores and the associated stores Available online stores.

Despite all the anticipation for the revival of the two Battlefront games, there is also some criticism of publisher Aspyr's approach. Ultimately, this collection is nothing more than a marginally revised version of the original Battlefront and Battlefront 2 releases, which are available on Steam for around ten euros each. Aspyr, on the other hand, charges 30.73 euros for the Classic Collection on Steam – and this already includes the pre-order discount of 10 percent; After publication, the price initially jumps to the regularly stated 34.14 euros.
The scope of the work is also probably limited and in no way justifies the bundle surcharge for the new edition, as at least the /r/pcaming community on Reddit thinks. Based on the release trailer, the accusation is made that Aspyr has simply taken over an “outdated mod” that has ported the Xbox-exclusive maps and characters to the PC version. The maps are Bespin, Rhen Var Citadel, Rhen Var Harbor and Yavin Arena; The heroes added via mod, however, go by the names Kit Fisto and Asajj Ventress.

Using the heroes as an example, the Reddit post Aspyr claims to have figured out: According to this, the modder “iamstupid” on the ModDB platform had already taken over existing characters in Battlefront 2 Classic and given them new skins to make the appearance as close as possible to keep the Xbox version. In the announcement trailer for the Classic Collection, it is briefly apparent that the character model for Asajj Ventress is identical to the mod version.
The mod developer himself also commented on the situation on the official Steam discussion page about the bundle. According to him, Aspyr not only adopted the modification, but also chose an outdated version. In principle, the person behind the mod has no problems with the fact that Aspyr has, to a certain extent, stolen assets, but the mod creator would like at least the bug fixes that have since been made in the animations to also be integrated into the game. Overall, the Reddit post states that they wanted more for the Star Wars Battlefront Classic Collection than a bundle that was 15 euros more expensive, which “only included an outdated mod, split-screen mode and controller support”. Aspyr itself has not yet issued a statement.
