At the end of 2023, there were 45.2 million IPv4 addresses in the RuNet, as indicated in the report for last year of the Center for Monitoring and Control of the Public Communications Network (TsMU SSOP) of the “Main Radio Frequency Center” (GRChTs, part of Roskomnadzor). Moreover, more than half of all IPv4 addresses (53%) are accounted for by just seven operators. The number of IPv4 networks was 11.26 thousand, another 2.5 thousand networks used IPv6.
PJSC Rostelecom has the most addresses – 11.1 million, which is a quarter of the total volume. In second place is PJSC VimpelCom with 3.5 million units, third place is in JSC Er-Telecom Holding with 3.2 million IP addresses. However, the operator Novotelecom, which has been owned by Er-Telecom Holding since 2017, has another 590 thousand addresses, so in terms of total number, Er-Telecom Holding is in second place, second only to Rostelecom. Last year, about 825 thousand addresses left the .RU zone, and approximately 430 thousand came in, according to RIPE NCC data.
The National Domain Name System (NDNS), created by Roskonadzor, replacing the infrastructure of foreign DNS servers, had no failures in 2023 – the infrastructure uses 17 geographically distributed sites. In the reporting year, the load on root DNS servers increased by 47%, and request processing time increased by 21%. The load on NSDI caching DNS servers increased by 72% over the past year, which resulted in an increase in request processing time by 119%.
The number of telecom operators copying the root zone to their DNS servers from the authoritative NDIS server increased by 16% (to 313), and the number of autonomous systems copying the root zone increased by 38.8% (to 289). Also, the number of DNS servers copying the root zone increased by 17% (to 862).
The possibility of independent functioning of the Runet is provided by the register of address and number resources (ANR), which, among other things, is designed to collect, store and process information about the resources of the IP address space and routing objects of the Runet. At the end of 2023, 5,902 autonomous systems (AS) were used in RuNet, of which 86% were active. On average, 36% of autonomous systems were connected to one AS, almost 32% of ASs were connected to two ASs, more than 10% were connected to three ASs, and 4% of autonomous systems were connected to more than 21 ASs.
As for transit autonomous stations, more than 12% of such systems had connectivity with two stations, more than 15% with three, and more than 10% with four. About 17% of transit ASs have the largest number of connections and are the main ones for the Runet. The report notes that Runet is characterized by stable and fairly high internal connectivity at the level of autonomous systems, which provides a large number of traffic paths between AS networks, reducing the risk of disruption of connectivity, and also allows, in most cases, to exclude the passage of the main Internet traffic through foreign channels .
According to the SSOP Central Administration, traffic between federal districts is distributed as follows: about 40% is in the Central Federal District, 13.9% in the Volga District, 12.5% in the Northwestern District, 9.5% in the Siberian District, for the Ural District – 7.9%, for the Southern District – 7.7%, for the Far East – 3.5%, for the North Caucasus District – 2.6%, for Crimea – 2%.
To counter computer and information attacks, as well as limit access to illegal information on the Internet, an Automated Security System for the Russian segment of the Internet is used, including technical means of countering threats (TSPU), installed on the operator’s networks, of which there are 1.25 thousand nodes. To combat fraud, the Antifraud system was created, which during its operation checked 102.4 billion calls and prevented 756.7 million calls with number spoofing. In 2023, 549 operators connected to it, the total number capacity of which is 85.78%. All other operators must join it by the end of February.
