Elden Ring's own director says that the developer doesn't “set out to make a lot of these games and characters fun,” but it just happens that way.
FromSoftware is the author of Elden Ring, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro in PCSteam Deck, PS4, PS5, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. But study by Hidetaka Miyazaki talked about Soulslike or humor recently.
Some of these recently named games can be comical at times, be it unexpected interruptions against bosses or some death from enemies.
But Miyazaki himself has been creative director on them and states that he does not intend for these games to be “fun” and everything happens like that, something that – ironically – makes it even more fun.

In a recent interview with Eurogamer, the Japanese talked about this and also other topics. An example of this was when he was asked about the Soulslikes popularity and its use often.
“To tell the truth, we didn't come up with the term Soulslike and we didn't conceive of it as a new genre or term in the industry,” he began. “[…] when it started to emerge… it surprised us.”
He says they were honored by it, but also uneasy: “We thought, 'Is this right? Is this what we're really creating? And do we want to be known for it?'”
But he also talked about the unexpected humor in his recent titles, where Miyazaki told the aforementioned media that only “some areas are designed to be fun and with humor in mind.”
Despite such intentions, the creative director believes that those parts of games that are made “serious” or come from a “dark place” are often misinterpreted as humorous.
As GamesRadar+ recognizes, there are times when you let out a laugh of frustration and nervousness when your character is crushed by a giant ape for the fifteenth time.
At FromSoftware they talk about many things, according to Hidetaka Miyazaki
“But it's not calculated,” Miyazaki continued. “We don't intend for many of these games and characters to be fun.
“I think it's just an interpretation this way and it's done this way because of the player and the environment he's playing in.”
And that's without counting the modders and/or speedrunners who are always looking for new ways to complete FromSoftware games: with one hand or using accessories are some examples.

Miyazaki says he enjoys this and is “constantly surprised” to see what the community comes up with. His games have become a “blank canvas” that they take, transform and experiment with per se.
“It's something we shouldn't try to discourage, whether it's speedruns or challenge matches or playing with a banana,” he says, “it should be enjoyed and it's great to see that kind of community interaction.”
