Just a few days ago, the first trailer for the long-awaited cinematic adaptation of the successful video game series Borderlands was released. Although it left fans with divided feelings, it has already garnered several million clicks on YouTube. So the film could be a real box office success. And if that's actually the case, then according to Randy Pitchford, CEO of Borderlands developers at Gearbox, we're in for a whole “cinematic universe.”
Is a “Boderlands Cinematic Universe” planned?
Just a few days ago we were able to take a look at the Borderlands film through the first trailer. The cast with big Hollywood stars like Kevin Hart (Jumanji), Cate Blanchett (The Lord of the Rings) and Jack Black (The Super Mario Bros. Film) is certainly impressive. Nevertheless, the trailer was received with mixed feelings by fans.
Although the success of the film is far from guaranteed, the CEO of Gearbox, the makers of the Borderlands games, is already commenting on the future of the series in an interview with IGN. He's planning a whole Marvel-style “Cinematic Universe”: “One of the cool things about this film is that we've managed to create a film universe that exists side by side with the video game universe. And of course the characters are there and authentic in the themes and even some storylines.
But they are independent stories. That means (the film) is not Borderlands (buy now)1. It's not Borderlands 2. The Borderlands movie is the first part of the 'Borderlands Cinematic Universe' and you'll see some characters from different parts of what you might know from the video games.”
