Microsoft plans to introduce its own scaling technology in games in the near future, which is called DirectSR (Direct Super Resolution). This became known from the company’s plans for a presentation at GDC 2024, which is scheduled for March 21. According to the announcement of the presentation, representatives of the DirectX team will speak together with AMD and NVidia.
The announcement states that DirectSR is a technology that will make it “easier than ever for game developers to scale resolutions to ultra-high resolutions on Windows devices.” Microsoft is expected to introduce software technology at the operating system level that will be universal for AMD and NVidia graphics cards. It is believed that Microsoft's new solution could be a response to Nvidia DLSS, AMD FSR and Intel XeSS, which developers currently have to implement separately, while the DirectSR solution will be supported by all modern GPU architectures simultaneously.
There is currently no information on when DirectSR technology will be released. The announcement says that a “preliminary version” will be presented at the presentation.
