Spoiler alert
This article spoils Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. You have been warned!
We will remember the year 2023 for a long time, as it was so rich in emblematic films. Without mentioning Oppenheimer and Barbie who caused a sensation last summer, an animated feature film quickly stood out. This is Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse which follows Spider-Man: New Generation, released in 2018. This production highlights Miles Morales who continues to live his life as a superhero, but who will have to enter the Spider-Verse to protect his universe.
This film was very well received, with an average of 95% from the specialized press and 94% from spectators on Rotten Tomatoes. With its solid storytelling and stunning visuals, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is even crazier, more dynamic and captivating than its predecessor. Particularly spectacular, few are those who admit to being disappointed by this colorful feature film bursting with action. However, the trio Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers and Justin K. Thompson behind this film admitted that they had to change the ending because of the public reaction during the test screening.
The ending of Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse has been changed
During an interview with Collider, the directors answered a few questions. In this context, they mentioned that the initial ending of their feature film is not the one we all know.
We did a screening (…) and everyone was like, “Boo!”. And we were like, “Oh my God, what are we going to do? We have to do something.” We ran back, brainstormed and made it happen. We watched The Empire Strikes Back and were like, “How did The Empire Strikes Back do it?” And we were like, “Oh, they gave you hope at the end.”
What was also missing was a cliffhanger to keep the spectators in suspense and, above all, to make them want to watch the sequel. Thus, the directors felt obliged to modify this ending, while there were only six weeks before the release of this film in theaters : “So we took it on board, animated it and assembled it in six weeks, before screening it again.” This change seems welcome since most of the spectators appreciated the ending, and have only one thing to look forward to: watching the third part!
