During Pokémon Presents, the franchise unveiled new games including a mobile version of the collectible card game that has been delighting players of all ages since 1996.
Pokémon Trading Card, 27 years of success
It all started in 1996 for the Pokémon Trading Card Game (also known as the Pokémon Trading Card Game). Following the success of the first video games in the franchise, this is one of the first derivative products signed by The Pokémon Company. And the box clearly had a keen eye in offering collectible cards with its little creatures. Quickly, the children grab their parents' legs to also have Pokémon cards and to be able to exchange them with their friends in the playground. Over the years, the interest of younger people has not diminished, on the contrary! So much so that in 2021, Franck Mathais, spokesperson for Joué Club, described Pokémon cards as “a safe bet for toy stores.”
Especially since the young public has been joined by older collectors. A few years ago, the fashion for booster openings also helped to increase the number of sales. So much so that the card game has become a more than flourishing market. In 25 years, more than 30 billion cards have been sold, sometimes at high prices. We remind you that in 2019, a complete deck from 1999 went to auction for the modest sum of $107,000. But in the end, it's not much compared to the Pikachu Illustrator card, for example, which is worth several million dollars. You will have understood, The Pokémon Company has a great goose that lays golden eggs and intends to exploit it to the fullest with a mobile version!
Pokémon Trading Card Game Pocket, la version mobile
After Pokémon GO, Masters EX and Unite, it's time to pull out your phone again for Pokémon Pocket Trading Card Game. The principle is simple: collect all the Pokémon cards on your phone. To do this, you will have to open boosters of course but also exchange your cards with other players. The trailer also shows us “quick fights” with simplified rules, although the emphasis is clearly on the collection side more than the competition side.
Obviously, we wonder what the business model of this game will be. Obviously, players will be able to open two packs per day for free. If you want more, you will probably have to checkout. It remains to be seen the drop rate of the best cards (or intriguing “immersive cards”) and the price of boosters to know if players will be delighted or, on the contrary, angry. In any case, know that the game is the result of a partnership between Creatures Inc. and DeNA which we will be able to discover during the year 2024.
