Smartphones with flexible displays, which allow these devices to be equipped with a foldable body, are actively expanding into the premium price segment. Apple, which doesn't have a similar smartphone, certainly can't like it, but sources familiar with the company's plans say its first device with a flexible display won't be a smartphone.
At least this is reported by the ubiquitous Taiwanese resource DigiTimes, which claims that Apple has intensified work with partners aimed at preparing for the launch of its first foldable device on the market. What it will look like has not yet been specified, but the smartphone segment is excluded from the list of candidates by sources. All efforts of Apple and its suppliers are aimed at creating a sufficiently durable folding mechanism and a flexible display suitable for the characteristics. The debut of the device, if it does take place after several years of development, is scheduled for 2025.
It was previously reported that the release of a kind of hybrid tablet and laptop in a folding case will allow Apple to test the demand for such devices with a flexible display, without too much risking its main source of revenue, which is the iPhone. As with other proposed Apple initiatives, such a device is not guaranteed to reach the market. The company usually strives to bring the design and characteristics of new categories of devices to a decent level before releasing them to the market, sometimes this can be time consuming.
