This year, “Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed” is a new edition of the former Nintendo Wii insider tip. Creator Warren Spector is looking forward to the remake, but still has an idea for a third part of the platformer series.
Recently with „Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed“ the new edition of a platformer released in 2010 exclusively for the Nintendo Wii has been announced. The charming original was well received by both critics and fans and received a successor two years later, but the planned third part of the series was never implemented. Series director and development legend Warren Spector (“Deus Ex”) still has an idea for it more than ten years later.
On LinkedIn Spector recently spoke in a short message about the newly announced remake of his work (via Comic Book). In his message, he says he can't describe “how excited I am that Disney Epic Mickey is coming back to Switch and other platforms.” He then praises the great work of the team at Purple Lamp Studios. A user then asked Spector in an answer whether he would still like to make an “Epic 3”.
Working on Epic Mickey 3 probably isn't realistic for Spector
Warren Spector replied that if the opportunity arose to work on an “Epic Mickey 3”, he would take it immediately. However, this would probably be difficult to achieve in his current position. The “Deus Ex” maker has been working at OtherSide Entertainment as a studio director since February 2016, where he is currently overseeing “Argos: Riders on the Storm,” which is described as an “immersive simulation.”
Due to his position within the development studio based in Austin (Texas), it is hardly realistic for Spector to take care of another large project. “I would love to do Epic Mickey 3, but I have a day job that makes that impossible.”
However, that doesn't mean that the former “Ultima” and “Thief” maker doesn't have any ideas for an “Epic Mickey 3”: “I actually have an idea what I would do in a tri-quel. However, Warren Spector did not go into any further detail. He already confirmed this to 2012 Digital Spyhe has plans for a trilogy: “I'm planning a story arc for three games and I'm planning a gameplay progression for three games, which I'll introduce in every game.”
The multiplayer part and the music, as it appeared in April 2015, should play an important role in a potential part 3 Reddit revealed: “In Mickey 3 I really wanted to expand on the multiplayer action. (…) I also wanted to make a really interactive music game. I have some crazy ideas about how you can use music and how you can do music in the context of a game that no music game has done before.”
However, nothing was to come of these plans. The Walt Disney Company permanently closed the doors of “Epic Mickey” developer Junction Point Studios in 2013. In the same breath, the company officially stopped all of the team's projects.
“Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed” is scheduled to be released sometime in 2024 for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC. In addition to revised technology, the new edition should also offer gameplay improvements and new moves. An official release date is currently unknown.
