02/27/2024 at 11:00 a.m. – With a statement that one would expect from Michael Bay, the Dune director demonizes dialogue in movies.
Only two days separate us from the cinema release Dune 2, the hotly anticipated sequel to the acclaimed 2021 film. The adaptation of Frank Herbert's epic and groundbreaking sci-fi saga relies on a world rich in myths, factions, history, characters and, accordingly, dialogue. The director Denis Villeneuve will probably also bring corresponding appreciation, right? Not as much as you would think. An interview by Villeneuve has now made this clear… he is not a fan of films being “spoiled” by television too much like “Theater and TV”.

Dune director hates dialogue
Above all, we must emphasize: Denis Villeneuve also worked as a screenwriter himself. Even in six of his own films, including Dune 2. The first part even received a nomination at the Oscars for Best Adapted Screenplay. But the attitude is clear in his head:
“Frankly, I hate dialogues. Dialogues are for theater and television. I don't remember movies because of good lines, I remember movies because of an impressive image. I'm not interested in dialogue at all. Pure image and sound, that is the power of cinema, but that is something that is no longer so obvious when watching films these days,” he elaborates in an interview with The Times of London.
Source: Warner Bros., Legendary Actors like Timothé Chalamet from Dune 1 & 2 probably wouldn't be happy about having no dialogue in films. Villeneuve's utopia clearly has forms for the Canadian director: “In one perfect world I would one exciting film make something that doesn't feel like an experiment, but it is not a single word spoken becomes. People would leave the theater saying, “Wait, there was no dialogue?” But they wouldn't notice the absence.”
When does Dune 2 start?
Dune 2 can be seen in cinemas from Thursday, February 29, 2024. Then you can see for yourself whether Villeneuve was able to reduce the role of dialogue without diminishing the essence of Herbert's sci-fi world. Part 1 was already a minimalist adaptation that preferred more mystery than lengthy exposition.
