The name ProMotion was chosen by Apple to designate screens with a 120 Hz refresh rate on its equipment. After several years of waiting, everything indicates that this technology will finally be implemented in the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus.
A new report from The Elec now raises the possibility of this equipment featuring technology that has been exclusive to the Pro models. But all of this will still depend on the panels produced by BOE.
Apple plans to bring LTPO OLED displays to the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus
The source in question cites sources close to Apple's supply chain. According to them, the North American technology company plans to bring screens with LTPO OLED technology to the base models of its smartphones.
OLED screens with LTPO technology are what Apple uses in the Pro models of its smartphones. In summary, these allow the use of a variable refresh rate between 1 Hz and 120 Hz.
Apparently, the Chinese company BOE is collaborating with Apple on this task. The first sent samples of these screens to Apple last year and is now waiting for the technology giant to approve them.
Given this scenario, these LTPO OLED screens are not expected to be ready for the launch of the iPhone 16 later this year. Furthermore, it seems that BOE still faces some problems in meeting the quality standards required by Apple.
Given this, it is likely that these screens will only reach the market in 2025, therefore, with the launch of the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Plus. If it comes to fruition, it will finally overcome one of the main disadvantages pointed out to the base models of Apple smartphones.
The introduction of this type of panels on the iPhone 17 will also allow Apple to bring the Always-on screen to these models. This is because it is closely linked to ProMotion screens and their ability to lower the refresh rate to 1 Hz in order to save the smartphone's battery.
We'll see if this interesting rumor ends up being confirmed. There is still a lot of time before the launch of the iPhone 17 and until then, Apple may change its mind or face setbacks that force it to postpone the implementation of this technology.
