It only takes one scene to make a film iconic, and this cult moment from the Star Wars prelogy almost never saw the light of day.
For a film to become “cult”, it absolutely needs a scene that leaves a lasting impression. And that’s good, because the Star Wars saga has plenty of them. From the Phantom Menace ship race to the cryogenicization of Han Solo in Episode V, including the legendary “I am your father”, George Lucas' films have left their mark on generations. But among them, a scene that shocked everyone almost never saw the light of day. It is found in one of the most popular episodes of the saga: Revenge of the Sith.
A traumatic scene…
For those who are not familiar with the Jedi universe, a short summary is in order. After being tempted by Chancellor Palpatine, Anakin Skywalker gradually sinks into the dark side. When his master tells him that the Jedi are the last obstacle to peace and the rescue of his beloved Padme, the one who will become Darth Vader then goes to the temple to confront them. On the way, he comes across young padawans aged around 10 who come to ask him about the situation. This is where, in a chilling scene, Anakin massacres the young apprentices in front of him one by one, without any apparent emotion.. This scene, although quickly dispatched in the feature film, marked an entire generation, especially since Obiwan Kenobi, Anakin's friend and master, must view the surveillance images to find out what happened. pass. He can't believe his eyes, just like the spectators.
…which might never have seen the light of day
In an interview given to Empire magazine, Hayden Christensen talks about the filming of this scene which, although very dark for Star Wars, was necessary.
There was a lot of discussion about whether we should do this scene, and I'm very happy that George Lucas chose to do it. It was a bold choice. And it's shocking.
A scene that disturbed the adults…but which did not frighten the children at all. Indeed, while the actors and director were wondering whether to put this scene in the final film, the young apprentices were not at all intimidated. Hayden Christensen will go so far as to say that “the children seem to have forgotten this sequence”. Lucky for us that Lucas decided to finally keep her.
