The film festival returns one more year with the most coveted awards on the big screen, which will surely leave more than one surprise among the winners.
In the world of cinema, when spring approaches on the horizon, everyone knows that it is time to dress up to honor the best films of the previous year, as well as their performers and crews, at the Awards Ceremony. Oscar awards.
2024 is not going to be any exception, and in fact it will be a great gala treat after several years that were somewhat sour due to the pandemic, slaps and a certain lack of films that managed to dazzle audiences in movie theaters. Last 2023 we had twelve months of pure cinema, with blockbusters, overwhelming, daring films… and more than one disappointment, of course.
It has been the year of Barbenheimer, although the Oscars are not going to reflect it as much as one might expect, the year of Super Mario Bros: The Movie sweeping and overturning pre-established prejudices due to its dubbing. We even have Spain fighting in three different categories with Robot Dreams and The Snow Society.
There is no doubt that the 96th Academy Awards It will give a lot to talk about, for better and, perhaps, for worse – let's hope not -, starting with the big favorites.
Three-way fight for the Oscars
As we have said, the expectations of many were that Barbie and Oppenheimer would meet again at the Oscars after the stellar box office duel they had in 2023, but the Academy had other plans.
Although Barbie got 8 nominationsthe absences of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie in key categories such as Best Director or Best Actress have stung horrors and have left them out of what we could consider “favorites.”
Instead, there are three films equally powerful that accumulate a lot of nominations, starting with their great “rival”, Oppenheimerwhich has been nominated up to 13 times and that she starts as a great favorite due to the numbers, although we already know that the Oscars take many turns.
Christopher Nolan could shake off the curse that follows him with multiple nominations in his career, and zero awards. Oppenheimer will give him three more opportunities to go on stage at the Dolby Theatre.
Secondly, we have Poor Creatures, the movie Yorgos Lanthimos, which once again forms a tandem with Emma Stone, who has captivated critics and audiences. 11 nominations make it the first contender for the biopic starring pro Cillian Murphy.
The third in contention is The Moon Killers, with a titan like Martin Scorsese in charge of an impeccable cast that includes names like Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro and Lily Gladstone. Con 10 nominationscloses this trio of films that reached double figures in their Oscar options.
And be careful, if you think that Martin Scorsese film has fewer possibilities because it is from Apple TV+, we remind you that the streaming platform is the only one that has an Oscar for Best Film for Coda: The Sounds of Silence.
All this does not mean that some of the other films, Barbie included, are surprising. The sit-out of Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie may be a bad omen, but it is still fighting for the Oscar for Best Picture.
Where can you watch the Oscars and when are they held?
The 96th Academy Awards will take place at the Dolby Theatre from Los Angeles next March 10, 2024, although in Spain it will already be the early morning of March 11.
After some strange experiments on the part of the Academy – some to feed them on the side -, the gala recovers one of its most reliable hosts: Jimmy Kimmel.
In Spain, it will be Movistar Plus+ who will not miss their annual event to share the film festival with their clients, with additional programming before and after the gala —they usually start around 11 or 12 at night, 10 or 11 in the Canary Islands—.
The ceremony itself starts at 02:03 Spanish peninsular time —01:30 in the Canary Islands—although first there will be the red carpet where the big nominees will be the big goal.
The premiere season will close with the 2024 Oscars: Who will be the big winner of the year in the most prestigious awards in the film industry?
