Knowing that Portugal imports many used cars from other countries, particularly Germany, is not at all new. It is a very common and ancient practice, with varying levels of success. In fact, there are several companies completely focused on this type of services!
Unfortunately, this is a consequence of the Portuguese tax system, in which, forgetting the condition of the imported vehicle, it is almost always more advantageous to look for a model with a larger displacement, with more extras, but almost always “old”, abroad, than what is buy the same car within doors.
But still, finding out the real numbers… It's scary!
Cars: Portugal imports half of new sales in used vehicles
Therefore, very briefly, Portugal imported around 100,000 used cars in 2023, which is equivalent to more or less half of new car sales in the region, during the same period. It's an impressive percentage, which is normally only seen in eastern countries.
Interestingly, it is also a percentage that means a decrease, as these numbers were already above 60% a few years ago.
Once again, we must emphasize that all of this is a direct consequence of the completely inadequate car taxation that is practiced in Portugal, which at the same time ends up halting the evolution of our automobile fleet.
After all, instead of being able to buy something more modern, safe and economical, many Portuguese choose to buy “chaços”, which have no idea what the interior and mechanics are like, have fewer driving aids, but usually come with more extras. , more engine capacity, and of course, more horsepower. It is a disadvantage to the population, in one of the countries with the most deaths during their stay in the European Union.
First of all, what do you think about all this? Are you a fan of imports? Or would you prefer to buy a lower-end car, from a less reputable brand, but much more recent and therefore modern? Share your opinion with us in the comments box below.
