Intel Corporation continues to flatter itself with hopes that the interest of PC users in the topic of artificial intelligence will allow it to increase the supply of its processors equipped with hardware acceleration units for AI systems in the next two years. This year, Intel expects to supply processors for 40 million such PCs, and next year another 60 million units.
Thus, if Intel’s forecasts come true, then by the end of next year more than 20% of central processors for PCs supplied to the market will have the ability to locally accelerate the work of artificial intelligence systems, and this does not take into account the supply of products from competitors, which can be considered not only AMD, but also Apple and also Qualcomm. Intel Vice President David Feng, who is responsible for the company's client computing business, shared similar forecasts this week, according to the Nikkei Asian Review.
An Intel representative emphasized that in the era of computers with AI functions, it is important not only to deliver the processors themselves with a decent level of performance, but also to ensure proportional development of the software ecosystem through continuous interaction with developers. “Selling experiences to users is part of our business now,” explained David Feng. According to him, Intel is now closely working with Microsoft to achieve effective support for Intel Core Ultra processors with a built-in neural coprocessor (NPU) at the level of Windows operating systems and the Copilot AI assistant developed by Microsoft. The laptop user can call it using a separate button on the keyboard. The vice president of Intel hopes that the introduction of such an assistant will stimulate the renewal of PC fleets by corporate users due to their desire to improve operational efficiency.
Intel also involves other partners in optimizing software in accordance with the trends of the times. Video conferencing service providers are actively introducing artificial intelligence functions to track the user's gaze or remove the background and replace it with another picture. In collaboration with Microsoft, it also implements functions for translating sign language from English text, real-time translation from other languages, and automatically creating presentation slides based on text descriptions. Intel is also trying to use NPU resources to work with antivirus software. Analysts at Counterpoint Research believe the PC market could return to pre-pandemic levels this year, thanks in large part to the Windows update cycle, the proliferation of Arm-based processors and the development of artificial intelligence acceleration features.
