Executives of Clear met this week with smartphone manufacturers during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) de 2024 to discuss a price reduction in Brazil for devices compatible with 5G mobile connection technology.
According to information from the Tele.Síntese website, the CEO of Claro's consumer unit, Paulo Cesar Teixeira, asked in meetings that some devices not cost more than US$100, or just over R$500 in direct conversion .
“The price of the device is essential. For continuous use of broadband, there must be affordable devices,” said the executive. Claro hopes that manufacturers like Motorola e Samsungand the chip developer Qualcommmanage to reduce their prices.
Teixeira also expects the Brazilian market to have 5G devices at this price at least by the end of this year. The executive believes that it no longer makes sense for consumers to buy a 4G cell phone, as the future proof is now the 5G network.
Claro leads the 5G race in number of customers currentlyand for the executive, this cell phone price barrier is the biggest challenge for 5G to be widespread and quickly transform into a new object of consumption and inclusion for everyone.
According to the executive, in the coverage area where the company has 5G service, 18% of devices have this technology built-in, but these 18% of customers who changed devices are already responsible for generating 30% of data traffic.
