It is believed that the South Pole has never been shown this close before.
The team of the Odyssey probe, which unsuccessfully landed on the Moon, published Some photos taken during landing. In the footage you can see the probe itself – it is still in a vertical position – and the surface of the Moon.
According to engineers at Intuitive Machines, the company that created the probe, the photographs were taken at an altitude of approximately 30 meters. It is claimed that this is the first time that images have been published showing a flight near the south pole of the Moon at such a low altitude.
During landing, the Odyssey probe overturned on its side, which prevented its solar panels from receiving energy. Intuitive Machines estimated that by February 27 there would be so little energy that the probe would fail.
It is not expected that the Odyssey will be returned to service. Mission engineers believe the probe will not be able to survive the lunar night, when temperatures on the moon's surface drop well below zero.
