As if to better prepare for the release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, its elder brother, Final Fantasy VII Remake, got a little spruce-up with the help of a patch. If, overall, this update helped fix bugs, these were not the only notable changes! In the lot, a modification of the script was made in one of the ending sequences… But, rest assured, it's good news.
A few days before the release of FF7 Rebirth, FF7 Remake is updating
As surprising as it may seem, the imminent release of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has not completely diverted Square Enix's attention from the previous episode. We are not talking about the old numbered opus, namely Final Fantasy XVI, but about Final Fantasy VII Remake. On this subject, the Japanese publisher has found an irresistible way to attract newbies to this episode reimagined in three parts, namely by marketing a Double Pack which, as we tell you in this articlecontains no less than two complete games and one DLC… for the same price.
However, this is not the only news relating to Final Fantasy VII, and more particularly to Remake. On February 26, a new patch for the remake episode released in 2020 was deployed in order to correct a few stubborn bugs… and to make some changes to the English translation, which did not fail to provoke a reaction from fans who had embarked on a new run a few days before the release of Rebirth. In this case, what justifies their anger is the fact that this astonishing change in the script was made… on one of the last sequences of the game.

A patch that didn't only fix bugs, and that didn't please English-speaking fans
Indeed, the English-speaking players of the Final Fantasy community did not really appreciate that the hint of poetry that one of the sentences spoken by Aerith outside of Midgar may have had was removed. Remember that the young woman spent most of her childhood in the Shinra laboratories and then in the slums of the megalopolis located under the plates that support the beautiful neighborhoods of the city. At this moment, it is one of the rare times when she discovers the vast expanse covered by the sky, before pronouncing: “I miss it. The steel sky” (referring to the sector 5 plaque). Since the patch was implemented, this phrase has transformed into “This sky… I don't like it”, and that doesn't work for some people.
However, there is a reason for this change and it would come from a correction of the English version which, through its location, sometimes tends to alter the initial script. According to an interview given by Tetsuya Nomura, director of FF7 Remake and creative director of FF7 Rebirth, the sky symbolizes sadness for Aerith, the loss of the people she cherished the most, while the sentence she utters in Japanese would be something something like “The sky, how I hate it”. Therefore, the new English translation sticks more closely to the Japanese script. Recently, another case, concerning the English localization of the upcoming game Unicorn Overlord, caused quite a stir on social networks, highlighting great liberties taken in the translation.
