A few weeks before release, the “Resident Evil 4” remake was completely buggy. That's why game director Yasuhiro Anpo feared a postponement.
NHK World Japan is producing a documentary series called “100 Cameras.” As the title suggests, the creators place 100 cameras in one place to tell its story.
The latest edition of this is called “Game Developer“ and revolves around Capcom's studio in Osaka. The topic is the last month before the release of the “Resident Evil 4” remake.
Here you can find out: The new edition of the horror classic was still in poor condition at the time. In the video you can see director Yasuhiro Anpo going through numerous bugs.
70 bugs in just one day
For example, the image freezes, Leon falls through the map, or Leon and Luis' hands don't touch each other correctly. Elsewhere, a puddle flashes and items suddenly disappear. One of the developers reveals that they discovered around 70 bugs in just a single day of playtesting.
If we continue like this, we won't make it to release.
Anpo saw the release at risk
Unfortunately, the troubleshooting didn't go as planned. One of the team's developers even marked a bug as fixed, even though this wasn't the case. As a result, there was trouble with the quality assurance team.
Ito, the head of the QA department, wondered aloud: “Why is the bug fixing going so sloppy?” The developers should do it properly while they're on it, he said.
Ito and Anpo finally met. The QA manager expressed his concerns about the condition and said: “I have never seen errors like this before.”
Furthermore, just a few weeks before the market launch, a few elements were still missing. This includes menu screens and customized lighting. The latter was requested by Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, known as the game's “demon producer.” Unfortunately, there were further errors during implementation, which angered Ito even more.
In the end they still made it
The documentation illustrates how important strict quality assurance is during the development process. Because despite all these problems, the “Resident Evil 4” remake was released on March 24, 2023 in good condition. That's how they led outstanding ratings from all over the world with a metascore of 93 points.
The high quality is reflected in the sales figures:
If you don't have the new edition yet and are playing on PlayStation, you can get “Resident Evil 4” for 39,99 Euro Purchase from the PS Store. If you want to get the “Separate Ways” expansion plus a DLC pack, you should go to the recently released one Gold Edition grab. The price here is 49.99 euros.
