The main thing is Unreal Engine! Just yesterday PCGH reported on a new RTX remix mod for the original Unreal Tournament, which still uses chunky polygon models but uses neon path tracing graphics. And now there is also news for the single player Unreal from 1998.
Unreal in a roundabout way with a path tracing look
However, one thing has to be said in advance: The mod does not apply to the entire Unreal 1, but only to individual maps, if you will. A custom renderer for the Unreal Engine called D3D9DrvRTX, which can be found on Gitlab, is used. It is based on the D3D9Drv renderer and has been modified to better support RTX Remix. D3D9DrvRTX is then unpacked into the Unreal Tournament game folder and you have to change the UnrealTournament.ini. In this way, for example, the first level of Unreal 1 can be loaded via the UT engine.
So far there are still some technical problems and the aforementioned restrictions on playability. At least there is a corresponding video a well-known Nvidia employee a first impression of Unreal with path tracing on a Geforce RTX 4080 Super in Ultra HD. Jacob Freeman from Nvidia himself admits that everything is still very much a work in progress, but also hopeful.

Most recently, PCGH reported on an Unreal Engine 5 wrapper with which games based on the first version of the Unreal Engine are translated into the current fifth version with all its features. The DXU24 project is primarily about Deus Ex, but there is also a DXU24 version of Unreal Gold. As the creator explains, the version brought to UE5 uses the game's original assets and reprocesses them. Also in the works is the mod called “Unreal Redux”, which does not port the PC classic to Unreal Engine 5, but promises countless new features and quality-of-life improvements.
