Recently there was news that the Respawn Entertainment studio is working on a game for the Mandalorian mercenary in the Star Wars universe. The general description of the project and its concept sounded very promising, but the game was probably closed. Publisher Electronic Arts announced a major optimization. Reacting to the greater volatility of the gaming market, the company is abandoning the development of some projects under licenses and laying off some employees. The layoffs will tentatively affect 5% of the company's staff.
We know for sure that the first-person shooter based on Star Wars, which Respawn was working on, has been cancelled. And although it was not officially announced, the only project that fit the description was an action game about the Mandalorian. Going forward, Respawn will focus on Star Wars: Jedi and Apex Legends. You can probably forget about the development of the Titanfall series too. Electronic Arts' new strategy is to focus on its core franchises – Apex Legends, Battlefield, EA Sports FC, Madden NFL and The Sims.
Note that this trend applies to all major gaming companies. Recently, mass layoffs took place at Activision Blizzard, and layoffs were also announced in Sony's gaming division. And Embracer Group has continued a series of cuts and studio closures since last year. The latest victim of the Embracer Group is the studio Piranha Bytes (creators of Risen and Elex), which is under threat of closure.
