In terms of gameplay, “Helldivers 2” contains various elements that quickly reminded the community of “Metal Gear Solid 5”. According to industry veteran Josh Sawyer, there's nothing wrong with being inspired by or copying the elements of good games.
With the cooperative multiplayer shooter “Helldivers 2”, the developers at Arrowhead Studios delivered one of the surprise hits of the still young year of 2024.
Even before its release, the community drew favorable comparisons to “Starship Troopers” due to the game’s style and theme. A few days have now passed since the release of “Helldivers 2” in which players expressed further comparisons.
On platforms like Reddit or X (formerly Twitter), comparisons with “Metal Gear Solid 5” were made several times. For example, one user described “Helldivers 2” in solo mode as the “Metal Gear Solid 5” successor, which Konami unfortunately never provided us with.
“Scouting out enemy bases and taking down individual Automotins feels completely different than squad gameplay,” said the user. “It's so difficult to avoid patrols and sneak through rocks to escape enemies that it's hard to believe the game wasn't designed for solo players. I take my hat off to the developers.”
A comparison published on X also shows the quite obvious parallels between “Helldivers 2” and “Metal Gear Solid 5”.
More developers should adopt successful elements
An incident that industry veteran Josh Sawyer (Obsidian Entertainment) also commented on. According to the lead designer behind “Fallout: New Vegas,” it shouldn’t be taboo to be inspired by the good or successful elements of other games. Quite the opposite.
“I'm not kidding when I say that more games should just copy things that feel good directly from games they like and then build on top of that,” Sawyer said of the similarities.
“Copying requires a lot of critical analysis and is extremely insightful, even if you throw everything away and start over.”
“Helldivers 2” was released this month for PC and PS5. The co-op shooter became a surprise success on both systems and quickly pushed the servers to their limits. In order to cope with the onslaught from the community, the developers have continuously increased the capacity of the servers since the launch.
Additionally, Arrowhead released several updates over the past few weeks. In addition to bug fixes, these also resulted in various adjustments to the gameplay. As a leaked gameplay video made clear this week, a new feature will be introduced in one of the next content updates.
