At the same time, claims were made against Microsoft Corporation.
Three news outlets independently filed lawsuits against OpenAI, a company that develops the GPT family of large language models. The editors of The Intercept, Raw Story and AlterNet intend to sue OpenAI.
Lawyers for the publications accuse OpenAI of copyright infringement, claiming that materials from The Intercept, Raw Story and AlterNet were used to train the company’s neural networks. Thanks to this, AI can reproduce the texts of publications almost verbatim.
In addition to OpenAI, claims have been made against Microsoft Corporation, the startup’s main investor. The plaintiffs believe that if users of OpenAI neural networks knew that AI violates copyrights, then the popularity of OpenAI services would be lower.
OpenAI representatives have not yet commented on the filing of claims. Previously, similar claims were made by the editors of The New York Times, which also accused OpenAI of copyright infringement.
In a statement in response, OpenAI representatives said that The New York Times contractor had “hacked” ChatGPT, and it took tens of thousands of attempts to generate texts repeating the publication’s materials.
