In the wake of the Sony layoffs, there were job cuts at Insomniac Games. The successful studio behind “Marvel's Spider-Man 2” is addressing the public with a message.
Sony dismisses 900 employees in the PlayStation division, which corresponds to around eight percent of the workforce. Not least of all, staff at flagship studios such as are affected Naughty Dog, Guerilla Games und Insomniac.
The latter development studio released “Marvel's Spider-Man 2” in October last year, which has proven to be the fastest-selling PlayStation game.
Despite its success, Insomniac Games is affected by the cuts and is also the first studio to make an official statement about the layoffs.
Those affected should be helped through the difficult times
The statement published on Twitter/X underscores the magnitude of the layoffs and the loss left by the affected employees as a result of their dismissal.
“Like several other teams at SIE and PlayStation Studios, Insomniac Games was affected by yesterday’s layoffs. There are no adequate words to express our feelings about this,” said Insomniac.
The makers of “Marvel’s Spider-Man” explain that it is a “serious and unprecedented moment” for the studio. The energy is focused on “helping everyone affected through this difficult time”.
“For those who are hiring, there are great people who have made important contributions to Insomniac's history. We are very grateful to them and will miss them,” it concludes.
“Marvel's Spider-Man 2” has been released in the past few months sold more than ten million copies and boosts the entire series to sales of more than 50 million.
A high sales figure does not necessarily mean a high profit, as the costs of development and marketing must be taken into account. Margins are a key point that new PlayStation CEO Hiroki Totoki has firmly in mind.

The amounts involved in the development and marketing of “Marvel's Spider-Man” are also impressive. According to a leak, “Marvel's Spider-Man 2” is said to have cost $315 million. During the calculation, Sony assumed a 35 percent return on investment or a profit of $75 million.
A budget of 385 million US dollars was calculated for “Marvel's Spider-Man 3” and 305 million US dollars for “Marvel's Wolverine”. However, it is unclear whether the numbers are still current.

It wasn't just Sony that saw job cuts this year. In the Xbox division of Microsoft added 1,900 employees in January their discharge papers. And in addition to Unity and layoffs in the other studios, employees of the publisher Electronic Arts are affected, as we reported during the morning. Also an employee of the “Star Citizen” studio Cloud Imperium were not spared. Here “a small number of positions were eliminated”.
