The last Uncharted came out almost eight years ago, and there’s still no new one on the horizon. Indiana Jones and the Great Circle level designer Daniel Arriaga of MachineGames decided to fill the void in the hearts of fans.
In a video published recently, Arriaga showed how Uncharted could look like on the Unreal Engine 5. The concept demo is called Uncharted: For Old Times' Sake.
In the 18-minute gameplay demo of For Old Times' Sake, protagonist Nathan Drake and his brother Sam arrive at a guarded base in the snowy mountains to obtain the cross of St. Dismas, which appeared in the fourth Uncharted.
The short exposition is followed by pure Uncharted: platforming with a grappling hook, simple puzzles, stealth in tall grass, fierce firefights involving a tank, and a scripted scene involving avoiding an avalanche on a snowmobile.
Arriaga noted that he used third-party materials and plugins (like the IWALS animation set) to create Uncharted: For Old Times' Sake. The concept demo will not be publicly available.
Viewers were delighted with Uncharted: For Old Times' Sake, praising Arriaga for maintaining the spirit of the series, puzzles as good as the originals, and the overall integrity of the experience. “The continuation we deserve,” concluded AldotskRX.
Naughty Dog clearly hinted that after Uncharted 4: A Thief's End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy they would not return to the series, however, according to rumors, the franchise was transferred to another studio.
