While fans of the original work loved this adaptation, the sequel has been at a standstill for quite a few years. It seems that several factors come into play.
Recently, we have been treated to many well-made manga adaptations or animated series. We can obviously cite the One Piece series which had immediate success, but Yu Yu Hakusho and Avatar should not be left aside. However, some tend to forget it, but one of the best manga adaptations was released more than 5 years ago and has not given any sign of life since. Between the director who is putting his heart and soul into following through on his project, and Disney who is dragging his feet, the future of Alita 2 still remains uncertain.
Alita: Battle Angel, what is it about?
Adapted from the successful 90s manga Gunnm, Alita: Battle Angel is a science fiction film by Robert Rodriguez released in 2019. We discover a post-apocalyptic world where Doctor Ido lives, played by Christoph Waltz. In the landfill located under Zalem, a city where the wealthiest in society live, the doctor recovers the bust of an android which he decides to repair. With her new body, Alita, played by Rosa Salazar, discovers the world around her, from robot hunters to the most legendary sport around, Motor Ball. The film was an immediate success, grossing $404 million at the box office and received critical acclaim. However, while everyone wanted to know the rest of this story, it remained at a standstill for more than 5 years.
A sequel that will never see the light of day?
The non-sequel to Alita: Battle Angel can be explained in several ways. On the one hand, the director. Certainly, since the release of the first opus, Robert Rodriguez has been pushing the studio to launch the sequel. However, his presence in several episodes of what is considered the worst Star Wars series, The Book of Boba Fett, has somewhat tarnished his reputation.. On the other hand, although it was a definite success, the film did not make huge profits due to its hefty budget of $180 million. Finally, the situation of the production studio does not work in favor of the film. Indeed, Fox which produced the first opus has in the meantime been bought by Disney. Unfortunately, it seems that Alita: Battle Angel 2 is not in the big-eared company's plans.
