Much has already been said about the Qi2 charging standard! But… It's been more than 1 year since its announcement in January 2023, and we still don't have Android devices that support the technology. What happened?
Where are the smartphones with Qi2? It's been more than 1 year!
Qi 2 is exactly the same as Apple's MagSafe. But designed for all devices on the market, which of course, we have to include Android smartphones.
So, very briefly, the Qi2 wireless charging standard would bring the iPhone's popular MagSafe to the entire smartphone ecosystem. Yes, we are talking about a charging standard that would be based on the same exact magnets that give life to Apple's charging system for the iPhone.
However, despite its announcement more than 1 year ago, the reality is that we still do not have devices that support the technology on the market. Yes, it is true that we already have Qi2 chargers on the market, however, on the smartphone side… Little or nothing!
What is the reason?
In reality, it's simple, and it's not even due to a lack of interest from manufacturers. Unfortunately, despite the fact that the technology was announced in January 2023, the reality is that the certification program only started in December 2023, and as such, the vast majority of manufacturers failed the process and postponed supporting the technology until 2024 or 2025.
Why take so long to implement a seemingly simple technology? Well, as you can imagine, the smartphone that is launched today was not developed last week.
The launches we are seeing in 2024 have been planned for several years. Furthermore, across product ranges, manufacturers take advantage of the same design to create multiple generations of products. Which obviously goes against the integration of technology like this.
Having said all this, it is expected that there will already be some devices with Qi2 support in 2024 within the Android ecosystem. But, quite honestly, the thing is likely to gain some traction only in 2025.
First of all, what do you think about all this? Interesting technology? Know that you can now buy a case with MagSafe for your Android and enjoy the benefits without any problems.
