In case you didn't know, despite the fact that it is extremely easy to find mid-range Android smartphones that support a 120Hz frame rate, on the iOS side things don't work like that.
Do you want a smartphone with 120Hz, which Apple likes to call “ProMotion”, well… You have to buy an iPhone with Pro in the name, which in this generation means paying €1249 for the iPhone 15 Pro, or €1499 for the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
But that will change! It won't be with the iPhone 16 in 2024, but it will change with the iPhone 17 in 2025.
120Hz on the cheapest iPhone? Only in 2025!
So what is the reason for Apple to still continue to leave 120Hz for the more expensive models? That's exactly it! It serves to distinguish them and thus attract more consumers to the Pro models, which are more expensive, and therefore have a slightly higher profit margin.
More specifically, the idea is to send the message that the 'base' models are inferior. (Although very expensive compared to comparable Android models).
But, with the iPhone 17 and 17 Plus, that will change!
Something interesting, since Apple doesn't need to do this. The base iPhone sells very well, and in reality, consumers are not even very interested in the “Pro” features. Still, most likely because prices are much lower nowadays, and even Samsung already equips its entire S24 range with LTPO screens, Apple decided to add the functionality and differentiate its devices in other aspects.
This will allow you to dynamically adjust the frame refresh rate between 1Hz and 120Hz, so that animations are smoother, and screen movement appears more fluid. Let's hope the price doesn't increase again.
