A few days ago, OSRAM, one of Apple's suppliers, announced its intention to reconsider its strategy for the production of MicroLED displays due to the “unexpected cancellation” of one of its most important projects. Later, Counterpoint Research analysts reported that OSRAM's decision is related to the project to produce Apple Watch Ultra smart watches with MicroLED displays. Now this information has been confirmed by authoritative analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
According to Kuo, Apple has indeed changed its mind about releasing smartwatches with MicroLED displays in the “foreseeable future,” postponing the implementation of this project indefinitely. This is because the production costs of MicroLED displays are currently “too high” for the project to be “economically viable.”
“My latest research shows that Apple has canceled the Apple Watch project with MicroLED displays because Apple believes MicroLED cannot add value to the product and manufacturing costs are too high to make it economically viable,” the analyst said.
The report says that OSRAM was the only supplier of MicroLED displays to Apple at the time of the cancellation of the project to produce smart watches with such displays. Kuo also added that Apple has “no plans” to mass produce devices with MicroLED displays in the “foreseeable future.” The analyst called the project's cancellation a “major setback” for Apple, adding that many employees working on smartwatches with MicroLED displays were fired.
