Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann is hard at work on the next game, which he describes as equally ambitious and stressful.
Naughty Dog has been primarily busy developing “The Last of Us” for the past ten years. The first part of the series was published in 2013. This was followed by “Left Behind”, a remaster, a sequel, a remake and another remaster.
“Uncharted 4” was released in 2016, before the standalone expansion “Uncharted: The Lost Legacy” came onto the market the following year.
“The Last of Us Online,” in turn, was intended to become a live service game. The development has been stopped in the meantime. And while “The Last of Us Part 3” is reportedly on the schedule, Naughty Dog is working also on other projects.
New project very ambitious and stressful
In an interview with Logically Speaking, Naughty Dog's Neil Druckmann describes the new game as “really ambitious,” but also emphasized that development was “really hard” for him and the team. He did not reveal which brand he was referring to. However, previous statements suggested that this is not a new “The Last of Us”.
“The work on this new game is really ambitious, parts of it are really hard, but I really surrendered to the knowledge that it will be really hard, the knowledge that it will stress the members of the team,†says Druckmann, who at the same time tries to make the experience as “joyful” as possible.
Druckmann also stated that he was happy to lead the team and take their ideas and visions for the game into account. He particularly wanted to highlight the valuable contributions of Kurt Margenau, the co-game director of “The Last of Us Part 2”.
“Recently he did something about this new game and he really stood up and gave this passionate speech and I was just so proud,” says Druckmann. “Seeing other people rise to the occasion and surprise me in wonderful ways. Nowadays I really enjoy doing this and helping people express themselves through art.”
Not many games with Druckmann anymore
In the same interview, Druckmann admitted that developing video games of this magnitude is a very stressful affair. And him I can't imagine itto continue on this basis “forever”.
“It's very stressful to manage so many people and several studios worldwide,” says Druckmann, who is obviously already mentally planning the finale. He started thinking about “how many of these games” are still in him and there are “not many left”.
ON THE SUBJECT:
Druckman was creative director for “The Last of Us”, “The Last of Us: Left Behind”, “Uncharted 4: A Thief's End” and “The Last of Us Part 2”, In between, he worked in various positions but also on other games.
And too many large projects, which sometimes remain in development for years, are no longer possible due to age.
