The recent past has been anything but ideal for Marvel. The MCU films were no longer able to build on their great successes; last year in particular, one blatant flop after another was released in cinemas. This summer, hopes rest on Deadpool & Wolverine to turn things around again. But many critics see it a certain viewer fatigue as the primary reason for the mediocre performance of recent films. However, the Disney boss has a completely different opinion.
This is why the Marvel films actually flop
Bob Iger, CEO of Disney, was recently a guest at the Morgan Stanley event. There he commented, among other things, on the current Marvel crisis and also mentioned the previously mentioned viewer fatigue. Iger quickly made it clear that he a completely different reason has its sights set on.
“A lot of people think it's viewer fatigue. It's not viewer fatigue. They just want great films. And if you make them great, they will come. There are numerous examples of this. Some of them come from us, some come from others . Oppenheimer is a perfect example of this – just a fantastic film (…) We have reduced Marvel's output, both in terms of the number of films and TV series. That will be really crucial. But I have a good feeling with the team.”
In principle, Bob Iger doesn't want to say anything else, above all the poor quality of the films have a large part in the current Marvel crisis – and no ominous fatigue on the part of the audience. The Disney boss is likely to do so hit a true point have, because the ratings for MCU adventures like Eternals and The Marvels were anything but intoxicating.
