In the mid-2000s, the action film Escape from New York from director John Carpenter was already being turned into a video game. Then Namco failed, and 20 years later Embracer Group decided to try again.
Recently, in the portfolio of Slipgate Ironworks art director Eric Arroyo, they found a selection of illustrations and concept art for an unannounced AAA game, which was supposed to be an adaptation of Escape from New York.
The images feature familiar characters from Escape from New York, including Kurt Russel's Snake Pliskin, enemies, location sketches, and action scenes.
Following the publication of the images, 80 Level contacted a former Slipgate Ironworks employee. The ex-employee confirmed that the studio actually had a game based on Escape from New York in production.
According to the source, the live-action adaptation of Escape from New York suffered from problems (which ones are unclear) and did not survive a large-scale restructuring of the Embracer Group holding company, which owns Slipgate. The project was allegedly canceled in January.
The informant reported that Slipgate is experiencing money problems (contractors have not yet been paid their January salaries) and, unless the upcoming strategy Tempest Rising becomes a hit, the studio may be closed along with 3D Realms.
Despite the death of Slipgate's adaptation of Escape from New York, the cult film has already left its mark on the gaming industry. It was he who was largely inspired by game designer Hideo Kojima when creating Metal Gear.
