A Huawei announced this week the signing of a multi-year patent cross-licensing agreement with Chinese smartphone manufacturer vivo. The new feature should facilitate the use of 5G technologies on devices from the brand that licensed the rights.
According to Huawei, vivo has agreed to pay royalties for 5G technologies, opening the door for the company to operate in countries where Huawei holds certain 5G patents. It is worth mentioning that Nokia also did the same about a month ago.
The head of Huawei's Intellectual Property Department, Alan Fan, said the agreement reflects “mutual respect for the value of each other's patents.” This will pave the way for both companies to work together in the future.
The Huawei executive also added that the two companies jointly finance research and are committed to standardizing and sharing the fruits of innovation that will be achieved. An official statement from vivo has not yet been issued.
