The “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” trilogy remains console exclusive on the PlayStation. This emerges from an interview with Sony's Christian Svensson.
Update: The Washington Post has partially retracted the statement and called the wording an error. In the case of the entire “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” trilogy, “it has not yet been confirmed that it is exclusive to Sony” – whatever that means.
“The article has been changed to only mention the Remake and Rebirth,” said the responsible author.
Two scenarios are possible: The third part could also appear for Xbox or Nintendo. Or the confirmation came too early, which doesn't sound unlikely given the wording.
I am clarifying the second point: it was a mistake on my part to write the sentence like that. The entire FFVII trilogy is NOT yet confirmed to be Sony exclusive. The article has been amended to only mention Remake and Rebirth. https://t.co/zPl6MXBX6N

Original message: Christian Svensson, responsible for strategic third-party initiatives at Sony Interactive Entertainment, addressed the questions of Washington Post and information about the exclusivity of the “Final Fantasy 7 Remake” trilogy was revealed.
Accordingly, all console-related games appear to be planned only for PlayStation systems. Xbox players recently had hopes that “Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth” could appear on Xbox consoles after three months. This time indication, which was visible in a trailerbut apparently only applies to the PC.
Console exclusivity desired by both sides
“Securing the Final Fantasy 7 trilogy as a console exclusive is a major achievement for PlayStation,” the Washington Post article said.
Christian Svensson emphasized to the publication that console exclusivity was desired by both sides when the remake project got rolling.
“In the original PlayStation console generation, Sony Computer Entertainment only had a few franchises of its own. And to find a place in a very competitive video game industry, we tried to win the hearts and minds of key third-party developers like Square,” said Svensson.
This focus on securing third-party contracts “is still embedded in our DNA to this day,” he added. “It is directly related to our collaboration on Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.”
A trailer recently narrowed down the exclusivity.
“Final Fantasy has always been one of the mainstays of franchises on PlayStation consoles,” continued Svensson. He added that Square Enix is ”one of the best companies in the industry when it comes to exceeding fans' high expectations and showing what's possible with PlayStation hardware.”
Development for a platform offers advantages
During the same interview, Yoshinori Kitase, producer of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, explained the benefits of developing for a single platform.
He emphasized that it was easier to focus on building a world that included different geographies and indoor and outdoor environments:
“Final Fantasy 7 Remake”, the first game in the trilogy, was initially released for the PlayStation 4 in 2020. A year later, “Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade” followed for the PlayStation 5 before the title landed on the PC.
“Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth” was released on February 29, 2024 for the PlayStation 5. There is currently no information about a PC version.
