The Gorky Film Studio will participate in the project.
The Mars Media film company, which released the latest film adaptation of The Master and Margarita, is working on a remake of the Soviet fairy tale film Varvara the Beauty, Long Braid. The project is being created with the participation of the Gorky Film Studio.
The director and cast of the project have not yet been named, but a screenwriter has been found. The plot of the film by Alexander Rowe will be adapted by Evgenia Khripkova, the author of the script for the series “Call DiCaprio!”
The remake, Khripkova promises, will not transfer the events of the fairy tale to modern times. At the same time, parallels with the real world will appear in the film.

I adored these fairy tales and the Soviet film as a child, and my sister and I reread and rewatched them many times. I remember very well the finger of the swamp king Chuda-Yuda, crawling out of the reservoirs: “You owe me!” The fairy tale is full of humor, kindness and is populated by characters with very bright, memorable personalities.
I thought it would be interesting to make it now with the possibilities of modern filmmaking that can be used to enhance all its best qualities. But I’m also interested in developing and modernizing her dramaturgy. I'd like to keep the hooligan energy of the original and add some emotion. We do not want to transfer the action of the fairy tale to modern times, we want to modernize it with details in which the viewer will read our time.
Filming of the remake of the fairy tale “Barbara the Beauty, Long Braid” is planned to begin in 2025. There is no word on when the film might be released.
The original film, directed by Alexander Rowe, was released in December 1970.
