Microsoft, which earlier this year accused the Russian hacker group Nobelium of hacking into the email accounts of some of its executives, said that hackers also managed to steal some fragments of the source code and are now continuing to try to penetrate its systems using existing data.
According to Microsoft, attacks by the Nobelium group, which it calls Midnight Blizzard, which was allegedly behind the SolarWinds hack in 2020, have not stopped since their discovery. “In recent weeks, we have seen evidence that Midnight Blizzard (Nobelium) is using information originally stolen from our corporate email systems to obtain or attempt to obtain unauthorized access,” Microsoft said in a blog post. “This includes access to certain source code repositories and internal company systems.” However, the company assured that it had not found any evidence that its customer interaction systems were compromised.
Microsoft has warned that the Nobelium group is now trying to use “different types of secrets it has found” to try to hack its other software and, potentially, its customers. “Some of these secrets were exchanged between customers and Microsoft via email, and as we discover them in emails stolen from us, we are reaching out to those customers to help them take mitigation measures,” she said. Microsoft.
The company noted that it continues to actively investigate the activities of Midnight Blizzard, promising to share the results with the public and customers.
