Long before Dragon Ball swept away everything in its path, an anime left its titanic mark on Japanese television and the still young Japanese animation industry. In 1979, the animated series Mobile Suit Gundam was released on the small screen. 45 years, dozens of series and films later, the franchise has never been more powerful. In 2024, one of the most famous spin-offs is making a comeback, not on TV but in cinema.
Before getting to the heart of the matter, it is necessary to present the Mobile Suit Gundam franchise which is certainly known to fans of Japan animation and/or giant robots, but not necessarily to the general public. It is a science fiction saga featuring “mechas” during conflicts involving planet Earth, but also the solar system. There are several timelines independent of each other. The main one is called UC (for Universal Century) and remains very popular even today. However, several “timelines” have been able to stand out and take off to the point of obscuring the one at the origin of everything. We could mention the timelines “After Colony” from Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and “Post Disaster” from Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, but the one that interests us in 2024 is none other than the “Cosmic Era” from Mobile Suit Gundam Seed.
The return of Gundam Seed… at the cinema
Mobile Suit Gundam Seed was a real phenomenon when it was broadcast between 2002 and 2003. This ninth universe stamped “Gundam” has won over fans of the franchise, Japanese animation and science fiction with its breathtaking visuals and its story centered on the “fratricidal” duel between two childhood friends against the backdrop of global war. The success was such that a second season was produced by Sunrise Studios and broadcast between 2004 and 2005. The saga continued in December 2005 with an OVA (for Original Video Animation) entitled “Final Episode: The Chosen Future” while that the spin-off “CE 73: Stargazer” enriched this universe in 2006.
Nearly two decades later, the characters of Kira Yamato and Lacus Clyne return to action, not on Japanese television, but in the cinema in an animated film directed by Mitsuo Fukuda and co-written with Chiaki Morosawa. They were already involved in the directing and writing of the “Gundam Seed” series. Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom was released on January 26 in Japan. In France, you have to wait until spring to be able to discover it on the big screen. The animated feature film will be screened on April 27 and 28, 2024, and not a day more, in CGR cinemas in France, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Here is the official synopsis for Mobile Suit Gundam Seed Freedom:
In CE75, the fight continues. There are independence movements, attacks from Blue Cosmos… In order to calm the situation, a global peace monitoring agency called COMPASS is created, with Lacus as its first president. As members of COMPASS, Kira and her comrades intervene in various regional battles. Then, a newly created nation, the Foundation, proposes a joint operation against a Blue Cosmos stronghold. – Gundam.info
