There has been a real update for Cities: Skylines 2 for a long time, which Colossal Orders CEO Mariina Hallikainen announced in the word of the week. It discusses the still lack of modding support. Colossal Order is currently making progress, but it must also be stated that there is still a lot of work ahead of the developers.
Modding at CS2 – Things are progressing, but still stagnant
The good news at the beginning: Mariina Hallikainen explains that the modding editor is being worked on diligently and versions of it have already been shared with a group of selected modders, whose feedback Colossal Order is happy to receive. That was a valuable experience for the developers of Cities in Motion and Cities: Skylines. The collaboration with this group has been going on behind the scenes for months.

According to Colossal Order, Paradox Interactive is currently running a broader Early Access for modders and developers selected from the registration earlier this year. This is intended to give developers an early option to provide direct feedback to the team on the use of Paradox Mods, the new modding toolchain and the map editor. Colossal Order says it would like to provide further information on each of the three sub-areas at a later date.

But the sobering news follows immediately: It will still take a while, because there is still a lot of work ahead of the developers. The assets are sometimes not in a publishable form and therefore need some time before they can be imported, it is said. Mariina Hallikainen further assures: “We have dedicated developers working on modding support and are committed to fixing bugs and implementing improvements. Therefore, we will continue to patch the tools throughout the public beta phase until Modding 1.0 is available .”
Ultimately, the fans and players will probably remain disillusioned, because the way Colossal Order's CEO's statements read in the word of the week, it is still a matter of weeks, if not months, until the modding platform for cities: Skylines 2 officially released. At the end of last year, the developers scheduled the release in spring 2024; the map editor should have been ready “in a few months”.
