The 96th Academy Awards took place last night, and a French feature film attracted worldwide attention.
Anatomy of a Fall, the French film of the moment
This name is surely not unknown to you. Anatomy of a Fall is a 100% French production which is a hit well beyond the borders of France. It was released in the summer of 2023, after receiving the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes festival. Far from stopping there, it also won the Golden Globe for best screenplay, a first for a French film, as well as that of best foreign language film. On the César side, no fewer than six awards were awarded to him. An impressive record which delights its director and co-writer Justine Triet.
This production features a family: Sandra, Samuel and their son Daniel, who live in the mountains near Grenoble. A peaceful daily life disrupted when Samuel is found dead on the snow, at the foot of their chalet. Is it suicide or attempted murder? Doubt is allowed, and Sandra is indicted. A year later, young Daniel attends the trial of his own mother, who analyzes the smallest detail of his parents' relationship and their daily lives.
Building on its success, Anatomy of a Fall did not stop at the Golden Globe for international prestige. The Oscars took place last night, and an award was given to this French production which clearly leaves no one indifferent.
An Oscar for Anatomy of a Fall
Last night at the 96th Academy Awards, Anatomy of a Fall had its moment of glory. Justine Triet and Arthur Harari received the award for best original screenplay against Poor Creatures by Yorgos Lanthimos with Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe. Very moved by this prestigious award, they took the time to thank the producers of this feature film:
There was nothing between us or above us. There was just total independence and freedom, that was the only way for us to make this film.
It had been more than a decade since a French film had received such an award at the Oscars ceremony. A reward that many believe is well deserved, given the quality of the production and the storyline.
