Recently the voice of has been heard again Shawn Layden, formerly the head of the US division of Sony Interactive Entertainment, and remembered with particular affection by PS4 owners. After talking about the increasingly expensive blockbuster games costing hundreds of millions of dollars, Layden spoke more in depth about exclusives.
Speaking on the What's Up PlayStation podcast, the former Sony executive spoke about theimportance of first party games and their function in the current market. While not denying that exclusives must still be an integral part of the business today, Layden explained that, at a certain point, they can become irrelevant and different choices should therefore be made.
“Exclusivity will always be important, helps focus and highlight the features of your platform. It demonstrates what you can do here technically that you can't do somewhere else. But as your platform becomes established and the market recognizes where you stand in the pantheon of gaming options, I think the need for exclusivity disappears a little“.
Just in recent days, Layden explained that triple A films which are made with increasingly dizzying production costs should be published on multiple platforms to increase revenue as much as possible. While recognizing the value of exclusives, then, it seems Layden sees a a more multiplatform future for the gaming market.
